Whites still doubted blacks and their ability to learn, so they saw the school as some sort museum. Since, Northern Whites donated funds to the school, they were perpetually welcomed.
After the death of her mother, her father remarried quickly and shipped Zora off to Jacksonville, FL. Zora was weightlessness and her father could not cave in her boarding bills at the school. To afford her stay she would have to “scrub down the step either Saturday, and be sent to help clean the pantry and do what she could ! in the kitchen after school” (79).
